Experience what could be the premier destination winery and vineyard in the renowned Apple Hill area of the Sierra Foothills. The heavy lifting is complete, put the finishing touches on this masterpiece. Very close to high volume traffic with easy access for a large audience. Starfield is located just ¾ of a mile from a freeway off-ramp for Hwy 50 where traffic count at the freeway exit is 29,000 cars a day.
Unique among California vineyards and wineries, consider this an English-style “ferme ornée” or decorated farm, complete with walkable gardens, paths, roads, trails, pavilions, an amphitheater, lake and ponds. Developed as one of the top vineyards in the Foothills, using background from Napa Valley and Paso Robles to guide the design, layout and variety selection. Thousands of trees, shrubs and flowers line the trails and roads, making the entire property a wild-land garden that invites discovery at all seasons, offering breathtaking spring, summer and fall flowers, dazzling fall color, and sprays of bright winter berries. Another benefit is that Starfield Vineyards connects to the El Dorado Trail, a 28 mile public paved biking and hiking trail.
All the original water, power and roads on the property have been replaced with entirely new infrastructure. Utilities have been undergrounded to enhance the stunning views of the hills surrounding Smith Flat Valley, and additional capacity remains in water, power and fiber optic systems to accommodate a phased approach to development. Beneath the network of paved roads, trails and gardens lie the power, water and fiber optic systems that help create a unique customer experience, as well as make the property easy to manage, while enabling future development with minimal disruption.
2,400’ elevation – planted 31 acres of grapes on hillside vineyards, choosing only varieties which grow in southern Europe near the Mediterranean Sea. These Rhône, Italian and Spanish varieties are traditionally grown on rocky hillsides in warm Mediterranean climates. The rocky soils, steep hillsides, mountain climate, and impeccable viticulture create a terroir that is ideal for the Mediterranean varieties, expressing the savory tastes of the red wines, and the floral notes of the whites.
Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Counoise, Tannat, Cinsault, Barbera, Aglianico, Tempranillo, Petite Sirah
Roussanne, Marsanne, Viognier, Vermentino, Fiano, Muscat Blanc, Muscat of Alexandria
10 Acres of Wild-Land Gardens
Extensive trails and wild-land gardens have been developed around the vineyard, creating a visitor experience that’s unique among California vineyards and wineries.
The restored lake and two ponds are linked by over three miles of paved roads and trails to sync everything together and create paths for visitors to explore the property. Over 1,500 trees have been planted, including dogwoods, maples, scarlet oaks, tupelos, ginkos, aspen, alders, river birch and others. In addition over 1,500 shrubs have been planted, including rhododendrons, azaleas, hydrangeas, serviceberries, mock orange, wild roses, coffee berries, forsythia, Japanese honeysuckle, buckwheat and many others.
The lake and each pond were developed as unique water gardens with their own fascinating ecosystems, supporting a variety of plant and wildlife. All trails lead to the ponds, and the water environments make all the trails special.
The Mountain Amphitheater
The potential for events and special occasions looms large throughout the entire property. However, a natural swale below the Rose Arbor and above Starfield Lake, shaded most of the day by tall Ponderosa pines presented an ideal location for the mountain amphitheater. The amphitheater can easily accommodate 300+ on the multi-tiered grass lawn with extensive lighting for evening occasions. Because hosting events is an important aspect of direct-to-consumer wine marketing, the Mountain Amphitheater was created. The amphitheater is also far enough away from the tasting room so that neither will be disturbed or distracted by separate events. Nestled between the pine trees, lake and vineyard, with the Rose Arbor in the background, it may be the most beautiful amphitheater in California.
The Lake Pavilion
The Lake Pavilion is an icon of Starfield as it shimmers over the waters of Starfield Lake, framing views of the lake, forest, gardens, vineyards and mountains behind. It brings together all parts of the Starfield experience. The Lake Pavilion is intended for Wine Club members and VIP guests only. The pavilion also offers additional potential for private events and parties.
The Flag Monument
The Flag Monument, clearly visible from Hwy 50, celebrates the vineyard. Each flag represents the country of origin of our grapevines. Standing behind the monument, the American flag on the right represents the rootstocks on which all of our varieties are grafted. Next to it, the French flag represents all our Rhone varietals. Then, the Italian flag represents the Piemont, Calabria, Sardinia, and Sicilian varietals. Bringing up the opposite side, the Spanish flag represents Tempranillo from Ribera del Duoro.
Winery & Tasting Room
There are many options for the Tasting Room. The current concept is to convert the existing house to a 3,600 sq ft. tasting room with another 700 sq ft of covered patio. Far reaching views from the top of the hill with ample parking make this a natural decision.
Several options for a winery await a buyer, build either a 13,000 sq ft. signature winery on the hill near the tasting room , or a smaller 9,500 sq ft. metal building below Partridge Pond, both of which could be used as custom crush facilities, ,or converted to barrel or case goods storage facilities later. As designed the winery on the hill has room for 17 tanks plus at least 1,500 barrels. It has a second story in the middle section to house offices, conference room and laboratory, with cold room below for macro-bin fermentations plus white barrel fermentations. For those with larger production in mind, there is room on the parcel across Partridge Place Road to build a much larger winery, possibly up to 40,000 sq. ft
